More Information

Oberschaeffolsheim,

Origins and Name Oberschaeffolsheim, located in Alsace, derives its name from Old High German, meaning “house of the Schaeffol family.” The prefix “Ober-” distinguishes it from Niederschaeffolsheim.

Middle Ages First mentioned in the 12th century, the village developed around the Saint-Ulrich church under the influence of local lords. It endured conflicts such as the Peasants’ War (1525) and the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648).

Early Modern Period In the 18th century, Oberschaeffolsheim strengthened its agriculture and trade, benefiting from its proximity to Strasbourg.

French Revolution and 19th Century The Revolution brought changes to local structures. Annexed by Germany in 1871, the village returned to French control in 1918.

20th Century Oberschaeffolsheim endured both World Wars but modernized afterwards with the Marshall Plan.

Today Close to Strasbourg, the village blends Alsatian heritage with modern life, featuring half-timbered houses and regular cultural events.
