This street is named after Claude Rouget de Lisle, the famous author of the Rhine army’s war song that would become La Marseillaise.

The song was composed at 126 Grand’Rue (now 81 Grand’Rue) on the night of April 25-26, 1792, and first sung at 17 rue des Charpentiers on the evening of April 26, in the salon of Mayor de Dietrich.
