More Information

The area now known as the Conseil des XV district was originally agricultural land located outside the fortified city. These lands belonged to the Conseil des XV, which gave the district its name in the 18th century.

In 1862, the Bon Pasteur Convent was established near the Parc de l’Orangerie.

By 1892, the “Train Kasernement,” now the Lecourbe district, was constructed along the Bassin des Remparts.

In 1911, the city held an architectural competition to design a villa district, with construction beginning in 1912. A municipal decree, titled “Regulations for the Construction of Villas in the Conseil des XV District,” was later issued on February 17, 1923.

To the south, the Vauban district took shape around Rue Vauban and Avenue de la Forêt-Noire. It became a model for early 20th-century social housing. The Spach estate, designed by architect Joseph Nadler, featured spacious, well-ventilated apartments equipped with gas. A few years later, the Léon Blum estate was built following similar principles, and additional housing was developed along Avenue de la Forêt-Noire, Boulevard Leblois, and Rue Vauban.

The city’s commitment to social housing was exemplified by the Rotterdam estate, completed in 1951. It was the first large housing complex built using prefabricated materials. Designed by architect Eugène Beaudouin, the project included 800 cross-ventilated apartments centered around a park and a school. Despite their austere appearance, these homes were bright and functional.

The Saint-Bernard and Saint-Matthieu churches were constructed during the 1960s.

In 1991, the Bon Pasteur Convent was demolished to make way for upscale residential buildings arranged around an artificial lake.

Finally, the All Saints’ Church of Strasbourg, built on the former tennis courts of the macromolecular research center, was completed in 2018.
